First of all we have another Patron of Reading in Scotland. Congratulations to Laura Lam who becomes Patron of Reading at Kemnay Academy in Aberdeenshire. There are over 150 of us throughout the U.K. but only just over 20 of us in Scotland but we are slowly chipping away at it and spreading the word. Help by passing on the good news about Eyemouth PS and Holy Trinity PS in Berwick!
This might be of interest to our lung readers. National Book Tokens want children to become judges for their “Best of the Best Children’s Book Award”. You can apply by writing a short book report and you may win a £50 book token and the ten books on the short list. This applies to those between 10 and 14 years old and would suit those in upper primary. I would really like to see some of our pupils having a go!!
Apologies in advance but this is another list, this time of graphic novels suitable for primary school. It has been suggested by school librarians and I will mention a few of them.
Nicola Cowling suggests Corpse Talk, Bunny vs Monkey and Great.
Beverley Humphrey suggests Baby Mouse, Gum Girl, Baker Street Irregulars, Mighty Mighty Monsters, Bone and anything by the Etherington Brothers.
Joy Thomas suggests books by Raina Telegmeier and Nikki Griffith. All the classics as in Tin Tin, Marvel, Jules Verne, Robinson Crusoe, Kidnapped, Tom Sawyer and Shakespeare. She also recommends Graphics Revolve, loved by boys.
This genre is a minefield for parents, as it is for me. But I hope this is helpful.
Happy Reading!
