I have found a new author – and I am so pleased. He is called Mike Nicholson and he writes books for children, mostly in English but lots of really wonderful Scots words like fankle, clarity, stramash, wabbit and so on. A lovely way to read and learn Scots words.
So far I have found four of Mike Nicholson’s books. There may be more, but if not I am sure there will be!! The two for wee ones are just fabulous and are called Thistle Street and Thistle Sands. Both have fun illustrations.
As for the other two books, both are aimed at 8-12 year olds. They sound really hilarious. The first is called Grimm and it is about the Hotel Grimm, its dead guests and terrifying stories. The second is Catscape in which Fergus lives in Comely Bank in Edinburgh. The first thing to go wrong is when his new digital watch starts to go backwards, then all the cats in Edinburgh begin to disappear.
Finally, to go back to Lib Windram, reader extraordinaire, she challenges all you Eyemouth kids to read her favourite children’s book, My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. I remember it well. Lib has read it hunners of times as had her granddaughter. Thank you, Lib!
