I keep noticing articles about the film “Swallows and Amazons”, based on Arthur Ransome’s novel for children – and adults, no doubt, set in the Lake District. The film came out on the 19th August and some of you may already have seen it. I am surprised at the number of children whose parents have taken them to see it – with mixed reviews. The fact that it involves a war, of sorts, between two families of children had an appeal. Then it was likened to “The Famous Five” series – for posh children about posh children. But it doesn’t seem to have put them off. I’m quite pleased really.
And now for something completely different!! By chance I bought a beautiful book for children called “The Ice Dragon”, still in hardback (I think) and pricey at £12.99. It was written by George R. R. Martin who will be better known for “A Song of Ice And Fire”, the first book of which is “A Game of Thrones”. “The Ice Dragon” is a fantasy about a little girl called Adara, a child of winter, who loves the ice dragon. This story takes place against a background of war and over Adara’s first seven years. The illustrations are by Luis Royo and are quite stunning! I am going to buy it as Christmas presents for children I know!!
Happy Reading!!
