The last two weeks have been frantically busy. On the 12th I was on duty at Eyemouth Primary Schools Parent/Teachers Evening manning the Scholastic book boxes. Lots of kids came in to visit with their parents and they were very keen to tell me what they are reading. A lot of graphic books going about but more of that later. But we need more dads reading! Lots of mums and grannies are Reading but a few of the dads admitted to NOT having read a book since they were at school. Now that’s a challenge for me. Let’s find the right book!
Then I was back on the 19th, this time to celebrate R. l. Stevenson’s birthday despite it being a bit late. P6/7 are studying the Victorians so I performed the whole of Kidnapped plus some stuff on other Victorian writers and a whole when of stuff on R. l. Stevenson. The more I think about it, he had such a sad and probably lonely childhood. The kids are so used to me now they will happily sit and listen for 40 minutes.
Then Friday was quite lively with a visit to the Highway and Seashells Nursery Schools, which was hilarious. Wee ones are not my strong point and some of them are only two. But Margaret Christison and I kept them going for short bursts with some wonderful random interruptions and joining in. Well done, you!
Back to graphic novels. I was at Waterstons bookshop at Braehead this morning to pick up two copies of Ken Follet’s The Pillars of Earth, one as a gift and the other one for me. Bliss!!! I loved the series on Television. One of the young staff is Henry who is a legend. He knows all you need to know about Manga books and other general graphic novels and he said on my next visit he will teach me all about it. So all you kids in Eyemouth I will pass on what I learn!
Henry suggested the following:
Username Evie by Joe Suggest
The Pokemon series by Hidenori Kusaka
Tokyo Ghoul by Sui Ishida
So Cute it hurts by Go Ike Yamada
Baritone by Masashi Kishimoto
Yu-Gi-Oh by Kazuki Taka Lash
But remember mums and dads, it’s up to you to make the choice, just to make sure any book is suitable but all of the above are mainly being bought by upper primary school kids.
Happy Reading!!
