I watched a lovely documentary on Prunella Scales and her husband, Timothy West, as they meandered along the Stratford Canal on their narrow boat on their way to Stratford-on-Avon. They had been invited to perform a homage to William Shakespeare in this, the 400th year of his death.
On the way, they met up with several interesting people, one being Stanley Wells. I have a copy of his book, Shakespeare for all Time, which I treasure. The other guest was a surprise, being Terry Deary, who has written the Horrible Histories series. He proved to be an expert on William James, a Victorian engineer, who was involved in the building of the Stratford Canal. This is such a coincidence as several people have asked about books of Shakespeare’s plays written in story for. Terry Deary’s 10 Best Shakespeare Stories is on that list.
The others are:
Shakespeare Stories by Terry Read, illustrated by Michael Tickner
Usborne’s Illustrated Stories from Shakespeare
The boxed set by Orchard Books by Matthews and Ross
Six Shakespeare Stories by Leon Garfield
The one which I use is an old book, Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb in which the storyteller’s voice is loud and clear.
Happy Reading!
