Barry Hutchison’s The 13th Horseman is a hoot – parallel worlds and all that. Drake Finn and his mum move and Drake has to go to a new school. There is a shed at the bottom of the garden which only Drake can see – inhabited by three “nutjobs” called War, Pestilence and Famine. It transpires that Drake will become the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, which gives him a bit of a shock, as you can imagine. Brilliant fun for those at the top end of primary school.
I’m also thinking of reading related activities for next term and I am pinching ideas galore from the Reading for Pleasure website. One I fancy is to challenge the kids to bring in photos of folk reading in unlikely places, in a man shed, up a tree, in fact anywhere will do. I’m not fussy. As long as we get everybody reading!
