We had a lovely afternoon on Saturday. Up to the West End in Glasgow to visit the Botanic Gardens Book Fair! I often buy books of old photographs published by Stenlake and this time I bought Old Galashiels, Girvan, Troon and Stonehaven. I have quite a collection and I use them a lot in storytelling as they are so reminiscent of what life was like and give a strong sense of time and place. There is one particular photograph which my husband was so pleased with. It is an early aerial shot of Stonehaven where he was born and it showed the house he lived in as a boy.
We always visit Waterstones and I spoke to one of the staff, David Ramsay, who is a great source of ideas about children’s books. At the moment he is recommending anything by Ross McKenzie, Barry Hutchison, Lari Don and Jonathon Myers of The world of Norm fame. Girls might like Rupert Kingfisher’s Madame Pamplemousse series, Cathy Cassidy and Gill Lewis books. But of course, boys and girls can read what they want.
I spoke to Katie and her mum. Katie is ten and she and her twin read a lot, and I mean a lot. She had saved up her pocket money and had bought Seed by Lisa Heathfield, The Girl Savage by Katherine Rindell and The Serpent’s Shadow by Rick Riordan. Happy Reading, Katie, and Happy Reading to everybody else!!!
