Two things today, both very different, in preparation for my visit to Holy Trinity Primary School in Berwick next Wednesday. The Patron of Reading Facebook page (which is only accessible to Patrons of Reading and librarians, unfortunately) is a fund of information about all sorts of things – books, meet-ups, literary festivals, events, tricks and strategies to encourage us all to read and other such stuff. One of the contributors has discovered Jacob, aged four years old, who is a blogger about his visits to the “liberry” and all the books he has read. He is charming and not in the least camera shy! So far he has read over 100 books and he loves to tell us about them. I am so delighted he is such a big fan of all sorts of books. You can find him on theliberry.tumblr.com. Happy Reading!!
As for myself, yesterday I was at Craigholme Primary School in Glasgow, sponsored by Dr. Horace London and his wife Susan. This is my third visit and I love it. This is a school which has got it right and I always say, you can often tell the quality of the school by the quality of the welcome. Every member of staff addressed me by name and the children knew I was coming and had been briefed.
As it was their annual Scottish Day, in the morning I raced round the school like a lunatic and told Scottish stories to all seven classes. Then in the afternoon, the parents arrived in their droves for a concert of singing, poetry and music. We had two tiny clarsach players, three not so tiny violinists and children from umpteen countries using Scots as if they had spoken it all their lives. Mr. Donnelly’s surprise was to play an ancient Andy Stewart cd during the interval and all the children burst into song – and knew all the words. An absolute joy!!!!
