A lovely wee thing is, I hope, in the process of developing into something bigger.
Lib Windram, a friend from many years ago, devours books and is very clear about what she likes – and does not like. At the moment her holiday reading includes Lilian Beckwith but she is also a fan of Victoria Holt, Jean Plaidy, E.V. Thompson (whom I don’t know), Neil Munro and Nigel Tranter.
Lib, on Facebook, I mentioned O. Douglas who was the brother of John Buchanan of The Thirty-Nine steps. She was born in Perth and died in Peebles and is known as a Borders author. My favourites of her books are Penny Plain and The Setons. My mother-in-law is 101 and has all her books – and they are carefully hidden away in her attic.
I also like Rogue Herries by Hugh Walpole. I first read it when I was about fourteen and I often go back to it. I have an old copy which is worth a bit so I keep it hidden. Every two years I try to read the six Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnet. They are a joy, as Francis Lymond appears when Mary Queen of Scots is four years. For every book Dorothy Dunnet wrote she read 100 books so her history cannot be faulted. But they are stories all the same.
Happy reading, everybody
